Electrical Grounding & Bonding

A safe electrical system doesn’t just depend on the panel and wiring inside your walls — it also relies on a proper grounding and bonding system. Grounding is what protects your family and your home from dangerous electrical faults, surges, and lightning strikes.

What Is Electrical Grounding?

Grounding is the process of connecting your home’s electrical system to the earth itself. This is done with ground rods driven into the soil or by bonding to the metallic water piping where it enters the house. If a fault occurs, the excess electricity safely travels into the ground instead of through your appliances, wiring, or worse — your family.

What Is Bonding?

Bonding ensures that all metal systems in your home (like water pipes, gas lines, and panel enclosures) are electrically connected together. This prevents dangerous voltage differences from building up between systems and reduces the risk of electric shock.

What’s Included in a Grounding & Bonding Upgrade?

When we install or update your grounding system, we make sure it meets today’s NEC safety standards by:

  • Driving one or more 8-foot copper-clad ground rods into the earth and connecting them to your electrical service with a heavy copper conductor.
  • Bonding the water main within 5 feet of where it enters the home.
  • Installing a bonding jumper on both sides of the water meter (so grounding is maintained even if the meter is removed).
  • Bonding to other systems as required (such as natural gas piping or well casings).
  • Verifying the main bonding jumper is properly installed in your service panel.

Why Proper Grounding Matters

  • Shock Protection – Prevents exposed metal parts (like appliances or fixtures) from becoming energized.
  • Fire Safety – Helps breakers trip quickly during a fault, preventing overheating and fires.
  • Surge Protection – Works with whole-home surge devices to divert lightning or power surges safely into the earth.
  • Code Compliance – A properly grounded system is required by the National Electrical Code (NEC) and often by insurance companies.
  • Peace of Mind – You can trust your home’s electrical system is safe, reliable, and built to last.

Signs Your Grounding May Need an Upgrade

  • Older homes with no visible ground rods outside.
  • Metal water pipes that are not bonded to the panel.
  • Panels with no separate grounding bar.
  • Frequent tripped breakers or unexplained electrical issues.

How Long Does It Take?

Most grounding and bonding upgrades can be completed in just a few hours, often at the same time as a service upgrade or panel replacement.
